![]() ![]() ![]() Later on, after the siblings are separated, Hansel realizes how far he’d fallen. ![]() During another story, when he and Gretel live in Lebenwald, he finds himself increasingly bloodthirsty, to the point where Gretel fears for her life. Even a seemingly innocent character like the princess Gretel wrestles with guilt. The guilt she feels over this drives her to find the sons and turn them back into people, going so far as to climb through a mountain range for days and cut off her own finger (hey, I said it’d be bloody). Early in the story, Gretel realizes that the pair of villagers who were sheltering them had seven sons who were turned into swallows, and learns it’s because they wanted a daughter. Gidwitz strings together several unrelated classic fairy tales with the theme of guilt. ![]() While the bloody details behind the nine interconnected fairy tales are promised (and delivered) by the enthusiastic narrator, this book goes beyond its funny, compelling narrative and looks at a few themes in great depth, themes you wouldn’t expect to find in a children’s book. The stories you read as a child may have left out some important details, but A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz is here to tell you the real story. Also, their encounter with cannibal witch wasn’t their fairy tale adventure, and it certainly wasn’t their last. Despite what the storybooks told you, Hansel and Gretel were actually a prince and princess. ![]()
